10 Sessions – Online via Zoom

Derek Gore

Why did people dig holes to bury their valuables in or throw their treasured possessions into water or sink them into bogs? These were common practices in Europe from at least 4000 BC to the 17th century AD but the reasons for these practices are not straightforward. By examining in detail examples such as the Anglo-Saxon Staffordshire hoard and the Viking-age hoard from Galloway and others we will hope to understand the motivations which lay behind these activities.
